The Price of Socialism

As history proves, socialism always comes at a hefty price. This truth has been apparent even as far back as the time of the Exodus.

Numbers 11:4-6 (NIV)

The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!"

Although the Hebrews paid no money for their food, their "free" lunch wasn't free. Their luxurious fare cost them their freedom.

In exchange for fish, cucumbers, melons and leeks, the Hebrews had to build treasure cities to memorialize the megalomaniacal egos of their oppressive rulers.

When Pharoah provided free food, he demanded a treasure city.

When Pharoah provided free housing, he demanded a palace.

Four thousand years later, little has changed. Even now, when the government promises to meet one's every need, mighty big strings are attached.

When the government provides free money, it dictates how the money is spent.

When the government provides free employment, it dictates what each person will do.

When the government provides free health care, it dictates who lives or dies.

Socialism is the ultimate expression of oppression because every time the government promises a benefit, it always gets something more valuable in return.

When liberty is sacrificed in the name of socialism, dreams die and hopes fade as individualism is replaced by the collective advancement of the state.

Indeed, poverty with liberty is superior to prosperity with bondage.
